International Short Film Festival 2010, Albert Theatre, Chennai
International Short film festival involved screening of seventy short films , judged for cinematography, screenplay, direction and message. Subjects of the movies varied from global warming, to getting sacked. One of the most impressive works was Marte por la Manana, directed by Adil Firat demir. The movie is about a guy who has been offered a new job, and as he moves on, he plans to vent the frustration of his work life pressure to his boss, damn caring about burning the bridges. That one phone call and it had really paid well for all the agony he experienced due to his misbalanced work life equation, the nonexistent perks, and hand to mouth salary. He feels relieved after the unmannered and rather abusive speech to his boss.
A sigh of relief! He perched on the bench , like one does after a long run which has lasted a lifetime. The phone ringing, he receives a call that his new job offer stands cancelled since he has been replaced by another candidate. The world just shatters and he knows there is no looking back after what he had just done .He has no face to meet his boss again. After some time he gets a call from an unknown number and realizes that his untamed farewell speech had been addressed to some wrong number. A sigh of relief… again! He joins back his old office like nothing ever happened. Thankful, that he had not lost all.
Another movie Mirage had a beautiful story of a child who was pampered by his parents, had good education , played with friends and flew helicopters only to discover that he was dreaming it all while fixing punctures in a mechanic shop .Others in the category were
Loko Motiv : Black and white, good cinematography India 2020 : Good vision but quite a shaky camera
Art of Doing nothing: A movie on people who pretend as statues at tourist places , directed by Richard Wyllie .
There she flies: Refugee camps in Sri Lanka wanting perfect freedom
Dad’s Visit: Memories and mirages of people most close to one’s heart but farthest away in terms of distance
Momento : About people disconnected and yet connected in terms of being lost and not living in the now .
Others in the category of animations films included Education Bazaar, promoting education with equal emphasis on development of character. Overall, it was quite a creative experience, and pleasure to see the work of many art students and directors making short movies. Just makes me feel like picking up my handy cam, getting onto the street and making one myself.
